BCS Championship Game is next top 100 sporting event!
The BCS championship game always has a certain energy that you can only find when thousands of college crazies descend on a city. I’m looking forward to heading to Miami next month to catch the latest BCS championship game featuring the Florida Gators and the Oklahoma Sooners. Since the company I work for, Premiere Global Sports, handles the official travel for Oklahoma it’s pretty obvious who I will be pulling for this time. I have no shame yelling “Boomer….Sooner” since I do not have a college team of my own to get behind. It makes me sick that the school I went to, Boston University, doesn’t even have a football team anymore. BU’s only recent claim to fame in the football arena was that Tony “Soprano” Sparano of the Miami Dolphins was a coach there from 1988-1993. These days unfortunately I have to put up with listening to colleagues talk about “their” teams in the office during the college football season. It seems like every Joe I chat with at the water cooler either went to Michigan, Penn State, or Florida. It kills me when they are getting pumped up for a Saturday game and I’m thinking about which movie I am going to go see. Hell, I even think to myself I would settle for rooting for an Ivy league program. I could see myself getting up for a Princeton vs. Dartmouth game but then I remember my SAT scores (FYI Harvard vs. Yale “the game” made the top 100 must see list). Ughh.. thinking back what I would have done to go to a school with a big time football program. That should have been the first thing I looked at when I was applying to schools. No joke. Well I guess there are always on line graduate courses I could take just to get an affiliation with a school that has a good team. Does the University of Phoenix have a football team? I know they have a stadium. I could get excited every time a game is played there. How pathetic.
Miami is an awesome city to host an event. In the book I list Miami as the number one city for hosting a major sporting event. The reasons are quite simple. South Beach, South Beach, and South Beach. Well actually there is much more to it then South Beach but that area of Miami provides a great destination attraction. It also provides a central hub where fans can congregate in a fun party type atmosphere. Some cities are too spread out and unfortunately that can lead to a lack of energy. The weather in Miami is as good as it gets in the US during January which means plenty of golfing and much more enjoyable tailgating. In addition Miami offers a lot of flight options with several airports in the area to choose from. There are also plenty of quality hotels to pick from as well. Although in the book I list this event as a Must See 100 only when it is played in New Orleans, Miami is still a great place to take it in. If you can make it to Miami for the game it is well worth the trip!
Enjoy the experience.
